A place to belong. Room to grow.

A dependable home and people who care can make an educational journey possible.

St. James Institute brings together community life, personal accompaniment, and residential support where available. Young adults participate in a shared environment where they can continue their education, develop everyday skills, and learn to care for themselves and others.

Independence takes preparation

Beginning adult life can be difficult without dependable family support, suitable accommodation, or someone to turn to for guidance.

Alongside studying, young people must learn to manage money, prepare meals, organize their time, and maintain healthy relationships. Some have had limited opportunities to practice these responsibilities with support.

A stable living environment can help address immediate needs. A caring community also provides opportunities to develop the habits and confidence needed for greater independence.

‍

Learning through everyday life

Planning a meal means considering a budget. Caring for shared spaces means noticing what needs to be done and doing your part. Living with others means listening, respecting boundaries, and working through disagreements.

These ordinary responsibilities are part of formation at St. James. Young adults practice cooking, cleaning, organizing their schedules, and managing personal resources, with guidance as they learn.

Shared meals, conversation, study, recreation, service, and opportunities for prayer help build relationships. We seek a family-like atmosphere where each person is treated with dignity and expected to contribute.

Staff and mentors support this learning through clear expectations, patient guidance, and their own example.

A community built through participation

Residential support

Where available, accommodation may form part of an agreed support plan for young adults who lack suitable housing or dependable family support.

Residents participate in household responsibilities and follow agreed expectations for community life. Their arrangements take account of education, appropriate work and service, personal well-being, and progress toward independence.

‍

Belonging beyond the residence

Young adults who live elsewhere can also participate in the St. James community. Shared activities and responsibilities form part of their involvement according to their individual arrangements.

This allows resident and nonresident participants to learn together, build friendships, and contribute to a community larger than themselves.

Preparing for greater independence

We encourage participants to take increasing responsibility for their decisions, finances, routines, and relationships. Regular conversations help identify progress and areas where further guidance is needed.

Residential eligibility, availability, duration, and conditions are determined locally. Participation in St. James does not automatically include accommodation.

Our first apostolate includes Casa St. James in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Contact the local team to ask about current residential arrangements and community participation.
