Donation terms

How St. James Institute handles information shared through this website.

Effective Date: September 28, 2026

Thank you for supporting Saint James Institute (also known as “St. James,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). These terms explain how we manage direct donations and outline important details when giving through other platforms or organizations.

Please review these terms alongside any specific campaign details and our Privacy Policy.

1. Ways to Give

Our website lists our currently available giving methods, which may include online donation platforms, bank transfers (such as Zelle), and checks.

We may also introduce additional giving methods, such as crowdfunding, peer-to-peer fundraising, employer matching, and donor-advised fund grants. Availability varies by provider and location.

Security Note: Only use the giving instructions published on our official website or confirmed directly by our staff. Before sending money, verify the recipient details.

Protect Your Data: Please never send credit card numbers, bank credentials, or other sensitive payment information through our general contact form or via email.

2. How Donations Are Used

Unrestricted donations support our core charitable mission. This includes educational programs, student support, administration, fundraising, and other reasonable expenses that sustain our work.

Campaign descriptions explain the purpose of a particular appeal. Unless we expressly state otherwise, any examples of costs or potential impact are illustrative and do not guarantee a specific outcome for each donation.

Please note: A donation is a charitable gift; it does not purchase admission, accommodation, a scholarship, employment, or any other personal benefit. Decisions regarding program participation and financial assistance are made separately.

3. Designated and Restricted Gifts

If you wish to place a specific restriction or condition on a gift, please contact us before donating (unless the donation form expressly offers that designation option).

A designation selected through an approved campaign—or a restriction we expressly accept—will be administered according to its terms and applicable law. Simply adding a note to a standard donation does not legally establish a new restriction unless we formally accept it.

If a campaign raises more funds than needed, cannot proceed, or can no longer fulfill its stated purpose, we will reallocate the funds according to the campaign’s disclosed terms, accepted gift restrictions, and applicable law. We reserve the right to decline gifts that we cannot lawfully or reasonably administer.

4. Payment Processing and Third-Party Platforms

Processor Terms: Online payments are processed through third-party providers. Their terms and privacy policies apply to your transaction in addition to ours.

Fees & Exchange Rates: Review the amount, currency, and recipient before confirming a payment. Processing fees, exchange rates, or bank charges may affect the final amount paid or received.

Platform Tips: Some donation platforms include an optional "tip" to support the platform itself. This is separate from your donation to St. James. Please review this option at checkout and adjust it as you see fit.

Intermediaries: If you give through a separate charity, donor-advised fund, or employer program, that intermediary's rules govern the receipt and distribution of the funds.

5. Recurring Donations

If you set up a recurring donation, the amount and frequency will be clearly outlined before you authorize payment.

Cancellations: To change or cancel future payments, use your donor account link provided by the payment processor, or contact us for assistance. Please allow time for processing; a payment already in progress may not be stopped.

Refunds: Canceling a recurring donation stops future charges but does not automatically refund earlier payments.

Communications: Unsubscribing from our email newsletters does not cancel a recurring donation, and canceling a donation does not automatically change your email preferences.

6. Mistakes, Unauthorized Payments, and Refunds

If you believe a donation was duplicated, entered incorrectly, or unauthorized, please contact us immediately. Provide your name, donation date, amount, giving method, and transaction reference. Do not send full payment card or bank account details.

Donations are generally intended as completed charitable gifts. We review refund requests individually based on the circumstances, applicable law, and the payment provider’s capabilities. We do not guarantee that every donation can be refunded.

Approved refunds will be returned to the original payment method. If a separate organization or platform processed your contribution, their specific refund policies may apply. For suspected fraud, please contact your financial institution promptly.

7. Acknowledgments and Tax Considerations

We provide donation acknowledgments and tax receipts as required by applicable law. Please supply accurate contact information so we can send your receipt, particularly when giving by check or bank transfer.

The availability and amount of a tax deduction depend on your specific circumstances, the nature of the contribution, and local laws. We do not guarantee that every payment is tax-deductible in the United States or abroad. Please consult a qualified tax adviser regarding your specific situation.

8. Donor Information and Recognition

We respect your privacy. Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect donor information.

We will always seek your permission before publicly recognizing you by name as a donor. Please note that making a donation does not automatically subscribe you to our marketing newsletters.

(Note: Requesting to remain anonymous publicly does not prevent St. James or our payment processors from receiving the backend information necessary to process your gift).

9. International Gifts

Giving methods, currencies, fees, and eligibility may differ by country. Due to legal restrictions or provider requirements, we may be unable to accept certain international contributions.

We do not represent that a donation to St. James qualifies for tax relief outside of the United States. Please seek local advice regarding the laws where you reside.

10. Campaign-Specific Terms and Updates

Specific campaigns, matching arrangements, or formally accepted gifts may have additional terms, which will be provided prior to your contribution.

We may update these Donation Terms occasionally as our activities or legal obligations change. The updated terms will display a new effective date at the top of this page. An update will not retroactively alter an accepted restriction on a past gift.
