Discover a direction worth pursuing.

Choosing what to study or how to earn a living is also a question of identity: What are my gifts? What matters to me? Where can I contribute?

St. James Institute accompanies young adults as they explore these questions, understand their circumstances, and take practical steps toward a meaningful future.

Choosing a future without a clear picture

Young people are often asked to make important educational decisions before they have had much opportunity to understand themselves or experience different kinds of work.

Some follow expectations set by others. Some choose a program because its name sounds appealing, without knowing what the studies or daily work involve. Others have interests and abilities they have never had the chance to explore.

Financial pressures, gaps in preparation, and limited guidance can make these decisions harder. A young person may need help connecting their aspirations with a path they understand and are ready to pursue.

‍

An interest becomes a possibility to explore

Imagine a young person who enjoys repairing things but has never considered that interest as a possible career.

A conversation can help them recognize what they enjoy: understanding how something works, solving a practical problem, and seeing the result of their effort. Meeting an experienced technician or trying a supervised activity could help them explore that interest further.

They can then investigate suitable programs, entry requirements, costs, and working conditions. What began as a general interest becomes an option they can evaluate thoughtfully.

This illustrative example describes a possible guidance process, not an individual student’s story.

Listening, exploring, and making a plan

We begin with the person: their interests, strengths, experiences, responsibilities, and hopes. Together, we consider both the possibilities ahead and the obstacles that need attention.

Conversations, reflection, and appropriate assessments can help identify questions worth exploring. Practical activities and contact with people who know a field can add something equally valuable: a clearer understanding of what that path involves.

An assessment is one source of insight. The young person’s experience, judgment, and informed choice remain central.

Bringing aspirations into focus

As a direction takes shape, we help the young person examine what it will require: academic preparation, time, finances, consistent effort, and changes to daily habits.

Together, we identify realistic next steps. These may include researching a course, strengthening a subject, exploring a work setting, or preparing an application.

Our Catholic understanding of vocation also invites reflection on purpose and service: how a person’s gifts might contribute to the good of others. We accompany that reflection with respect for each person’s conscience and background.

Growing through decisions and experience

Young adults take an active role in exploring options and following through on agreed steps. Guidance provides encouragement and honest feedback as they develop confidence and responsibility.

We review what they are learning and adjust the plan when appropriate. Greater clarity can emerge through experience, and changing direction thoughtfully can be part of finding a suitable path.
