Take the first steps into working life.

Finding an opportunity, applying, and entering an unfamiliar workplace can be challenging when you have little experience.

St. James Institute helps young adults prepare for appropriate work and service alongside their studies, with guidance as they learn to take initiative, meet expectations, and build practical skills.

Getting started takes preparation

A young person may be willing to work but unsure where to look, how to present their abilities, or what an employer will expect.

Without experience or professional contacts, even the first application can feel difficult. Students also need to consider whether an opportunity fits their educational commitments, transportation options, and personal circumstances.

Guidance can help turn an uncertain search into practical action: understanding an opportunity, preparing an application, and approaching it with realistic expectations.

From an opening to a first experience

Imagine a student who learns about a part-time opening at a local business. They have never written a résumé and are unsure what to say in an interview.

With guidance, they identify relevant strengths, prepare a clear application, and practice explaining their availability. They also consider the working hours, duties, pay, and travel involved before deciding whether the opportunity is suitable.

If selected, the learning continues: arriving prepared, asking questions, responding to feedback, and balancing the role with their studies.

This illustrative example describes a possible experience, not an individual student’s story.

Guidance that leads to action

We help participants consider appropriate opportunities and prepare to pursue them. Depending on their needs and available support, this may include guidance with résumés, applications, interviews, and introductions to potential opportunities.

A mentor or designated team member helps the young person agree on next steps and follow through. The student takes an active role in searching, applying, preparing, and communicating.

Choosing experience with a purpose

Paid employment, internships, volunteering, and other practical learning opportunities serve different purposes.

We help young adults consider what they can learn and contribute, as well as the conditions and responsibilities involved. Opportunities should be safe, appropriate to their circumstances, and compatible with their education and well-being.

Paid work can contribute to financial independence. Voluntary service offers a way to contribute to others while developing experience. The nature and expectations of each arrangement should be clear.

Learning from the experience

Starting a role is the beginning of a learning process. Through mentoring and reflection, participants can discuss challenges, respond constructively to feedback, and recognize areas for improvement.

Our goal is increasing independence: young adults who can seek opportunities, communicate professionally, manage commitments, and make thoughtful decisions about their working lives.

We support preparation and the search for opportunities. Employment and placements depend on availability and the decisions of the relevant organizations.
